Environmental Advocates is leading the fight for New York's clean car mandate and for a state inspection and maintenance program for heavy duty diesel motors, a mojor source of health endangering soot.

URBAN ENVIRONMENT.
Asthma has reached epidemic levels in some of New York's cities. Residents fear thier tap water is unsafe. Children are forced to learn in unhealthy classrooms. Street trees are dying from neglect and not being replaced. Diesel bus depots, waste transfer stations and sewage treatment plants are concentrated in poor and minority communities. Environmental Advocates is bringing activists and lawmakers together to help solve these and other urban environmental problems.

WILDERNESS PRESERVATION.
New York needs a comprehensive plan for the long-range protection of our great wilderness treasures, the Adirondack and Catskill parks. We are working on a plan that combines protection of the backcountry with sustainable economic development. We are also fighting to protect our rivers, lakes, wetlands, and other critical habitats.
CHILDREN'S HEALTH
The banning of lead paint was an important victory. So was the requirement that children six and under be tested for elevated blood lead levels. Now New York needs a program to train and certify lead abatement workers to make sure that cleanups are done right.
CITIZEN SUITS.
Environmental Advocates is fighting for legislation that will grant all New Yorkers the right to go to court to defend state environmental laws when the regulatory agencies can't or won't.
PESTICIDE USE REDUCTION.
Everyday we learn more about the ways in which pesticides threaten our health. Environmental Advocates is working on a broad range of policy initiatives to reduce pesticide use and enhance the public's right to know about it's exposure.
